Stephenville appeared to be rounding into post season form with last week’s straight-set wins against Mansfield Timberview and Granbury, and it couldn’t come at a better time with the state playoffs beginning tonight.
The Honeybees (24-15), the No. 3 seed from District 8-4A, battle Fort Worth Arlington Heights (22-9), the 7-4A runner-up, in a bi-district match at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Burleson High School.
The winner meets either Denton or Birdville in an area-round matchup later this week. “I’m real pleased (with the way we are playing now). We played really well against (Round Rock) Westwood in the New Braunfels tournament then didn’t play as good as that for a long time,” Stephenville head coach Fran Metzger said. “I felt like we played that well again (last Friday).”
The Honeybees are in the playoffs for the ninth straight year and are 8-0 in first round match-ups during that span. They have reached the post season 12 times in 15 years under Metzger, who is 352-181 at Stephenville and 471-253 overall in her career.
Arlington Heights is in the playoffs for the 14th straight year, but in one of high school sports’ most intriguing losing streaks, the Lady Yellowjackets have lost each of their previous 13 first-round playoff matches.
In other 7-4A vs. 8-4A bi-district matches, Granbury meets FW Dunbar, Arlington Seguin faces FW Wyatt and Mansfield Legacy battles FW Northside.
